Common Types of Tourist Visas
Visas are generally categorized by how you enter and how many times you can use them:
1. By Entry Frequency
Single-Entry: Allows you to enter the country once. If you leave, the visa becomes invalid even if the duration hasn't expired.
Double-Entry: Allows you to enter, leave (perhaps to a neighboring country), and return once more.
Multiple-Entry: Allows you to enter and leave as many times as you like within the visa’s validity period (common for 1-year, 5-year, or 10-year visas).
2. By Application Method
Standard Sticker Visa: Applied for at an Embassy or Consulate before travel. A physical sticker is placed in your passport.
eVisa (Electronic Visa): Applied for online. You receive a digital PDF to print and show at the border. Many countries use Official Government Portals for this.
Visa on Arrival (VoA): You do not apply in advance. You simply show up at the airport, pay a fee, and get your permit stamped.
Visa-Free / Waiver: Certain nationalities can enter for a set period (e.g., 90 days) without any prior application based on bilateral agreements.
Key Terms to Know
Validity: The window of time you have to enter the country.
Duration of Stay: The actual number of days you can stay inside after crossing the border.
Overstay: Staying even one day past your limit, which can lead to fines, jail, or being banned from returning.
